about

Liisa Matveinen and Tellu Turkka are pioneers in composing and performing lyric in Kalevala meter, a trochaic meter used in and named after the Finnish national epic Kalevala. The duo was formed in 1994 and their first CD, "Mateli", published in 1999. Liisa and Tellu continued their collaboration in the Finnish-Swedish band Hedningarna. In 2011, the duo’s second album, "Vienan naisia", was released. Aside from Finland, Liisa and Tellu have been performing in other Nordic countries, as well as in Central Europe.

Iro Sissotar (1797-1853), sister of famous rune singer Simana Sissonen from Ilomantsi, was also an exceptional rune singer herself. A Finnish linguist and folklorist Daniel Europaeus wrote down as many as 78 songs, in the course of four days in 1846.
The album is featured by lute and hurdy-gurdy specialist Hållbuss Totte Mattsson and multi-instrumentalist Samuel Looptok Andersson, who are part of the band Hedningarna. Percussionist Eveliina Pietarinen has also contributed to the album.
With special thanks to Marjaana Laatikainen, Johanna Turunen, Finnish Cultural Foundation, Tellu’s dog Manu and Karoliina Gavrilov.
