about

Daniel Guggenheim Quartet:
Balladesque emotions in many facets

"It rarely happens that musicians manage to create a consistent mood over such a long period of time (...) and thus bring such refreshing moments to the audience!" This is what US saxophone legend David Liebman says about the new album by the Daniel Guggenheim Quartet . "Red Orange and Blue" is not a concept album in the strict sense - but one with a conceptual basic idea. "The colors stand for different facets of emotions and emotional states," explains saxophonist and bandleader Daniel Guggenheim. Critics rank the native Swiss, who sees himself in the tradition of John Coltrane and has lived in Germany for around 40 years, as one of the most expressive saxophonists of our time.

"It’s not often that one hears a set of music that absolutely sustains a mood. Daniel has recorded eight tunes but in a way it’s a one song recording. I don’t mean this in a negative way. There is truly a feeling from the artists that their contribution to the whole is a given. For example bassist Dietmar Fuhr solos several times always maintaining a mood and character. Drummer Silvio Morger knows exactly when to be THE DRUMMER sustaining the mood, or striking this or that cymbal, etc. There is an openness created by Daniel’s writing that places the priority on mood and atmosphere. “Solitude” and “Longing” are good compositional examples of the mood that is present throughout. Pianist Sebastian Sternal plays beautifully and with his years of experience really knows when to let go, or reinforce another soloist’s ideas especially when he is highlighted. Also from the saxophone Daniel’s sound is gorgeous and inviting, adding warmth and lyricism to the music throughout. These guys were all on the same page that day (or night) as far as this recording goes.....truly heart-felt....right from the first note. You can play this music for your grandmother and it would earn you some stripes!! How refreshing to listen and enjoy one basic mood throughout!!"
