about

Cheeky, sensual and highly topical. This is “Bonjour Liberté” from Marijke Jaehrling. On her new album, the German-Dutch singer focuses on the two most famous "Kurts" of the German cultural scene. On the one hand there is the writer Kurt Tucholsky and on the other hand, the brilliant composer Kurt Weill. Both have left an extensive body of work that has inspired many artists. However, Marijke presents a premiere with “Bonjour Liberté”. She not only combined her own new settings of Tucholsky's texts with songs by Kurt Weill, but also translated all of the texts into French. “Although the two never met there directly, Paris played an important role for both of them. As a place of longing and refuge from the unreasonable demands of their era, ”explains Marijke, referring to the escape from the National Socialists, which both Jewish artists were forced to take up.
And so “Bonjour Liberté” is a touching album in every way. It invites you to swing and dream and awakens a longing for freedom and zest for life with a sometimes cheerful, sometimes melancholy tone. With a voice that gets under your skin!
