about

Lisa Wulff is a true master at uncovering musical colours hidden beneath the compositional surface. A skill that the jury members of the Hamburg Jazz Prize also acknowledged when they presented the young bassist with the coveted prize last summer.

Wulff invested the prize money worthily - in the sense of art: in the production of her new album "Beneath the Surface" - recorded with her trio and top-class guests. On her compositions she proves that she is not only a virtuoso on the double bass, but also on the electric bass.

She also plays the latter with technical effect devices like the Octaver, which resembles a synthesizer in sound. You can hear it in "M. B. Ride", which is mighty groovy in the interplay with keyboarder Yannis Anft. A piece that should give fans of Viennese keyboard legend Joe Zawinul a deja vu experience.

Line up:
Lisa Wulff doublebass, sopranobass / Adrian Hanack saxophone / Silvan Strauss drums / Yannis Anft piano, synthesizer (#1,3,10,11) / Frank Chastenier (#2,5,9) / Miroslava Streychinska har (#4,8)

"A fine album that changes mood with each track - and finishes 'bassist'." (Stereo, June 2020)

»... much compositional complexity, characterized by contemporary beauty of form while refusing to be thematically pointed. Brilliant all, a little more centered still when Wulff reaches for the electric bass." (Jazzthing, July / August 2020)
